To ‘B’ or Not to ‘B’ – Part 3

Some of our words end in a ‘B’ and some do not but they all rhyme. Even when the ‘B’ is written, it’s a foolish addition and completely unnecessary. That’s they way it is with the English language and has nothing to do with anything other than an annoying observation serving as a cheap introduction!

Today, we find ourselves with a ‘B’ that is THE place from which we all find our origin, literally, the WOMB. This is such an unbelievable miracle and what happens inside cannot be duplicated nor discredited.

One of the phenomena in utero, is a baby’s heart will beat in perfect synchronization with the mother. If the mother’s heart rate increases, so will the baby’s and the same is true if it slows down. So, a constant high-stressed environment can cause physical and emotional problems for a child after birth.

But the more fascinating part of this is that studies have shown that even AFTER birth, a baby’s heart can sync-up rhythms with the mom from being skin-to-skin. The research shows that even sitting in front of, smiling, and engaging facial expressions and sounds, a baby’s heart can match up within milliseconds of the mother’s. The response of babies in these studies is not only detectable through technology but it is visible in external reactions as well. It is an absolute delight for all involved.

From this relational bond and deep connection that goes all the way to heart, further exchanges are seen. The mother is constantly in tune with the baby’s deepest and most central needs, even anticipating them as they arise, and seeking to meet each one along the way. The proximity of the baby to the mother’s heart, its delight in the intimacy of the relationship, delivers desired provision from the mother.

Psalm 37:4 gives us the same story and teaches a parallel truth. “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

Although this has been misinterpreted many times and used to falsely think God gives us EVERYTHING we want, the picture of this verse is more like that of a baby whose heart is beating in sync with its mother’s.

The word used for DELIGHT means ‘to be soft or pliable, to be delicate’, revealing the nature of this idea. It is only as the child of God remains tender, near the heart of God, that God can meet the core needs of that child.

Now, as an infant, we know that the care is dependent upon the mother. So, our analogy breaks slightly here. However, as we grow and become fully functioning beings, the responsibility shifts to us to REMAIN, or as scripture says, ABIDE, in God (John 15:4).  While it is different than a baby being held by its mother, the outcome and response of the parent is the same.

So…
Is your heart beating in sync with that of God’s?
Are you in close enough proximity to get synchronized?
Do you delight in the LORD, remaining soft and tender to the heart of God?
Do you need some skin to skin contact with your creator?
